Protea Chemicals empowers youth education through launch of mathematics and science revision programme

Johannesburg, 26 July 2022
- Protea Chemicals, a member of the Omnia Group, has partnered with Primestars on the eduCate Mathematics and Science revision program to provide examination-focused support for matriculants as they prepare for their final exams.

Protea Chemicals has identified mathematics and science as critical subjects needed to help equip the youth with the necessary knowledge and skills to understand the world around them and find solutions to the global challenges we face. Through this programme, which launches its #InItWithYou campaign on 26 July, Protea Chemicals strives to make a positive impact on society and empower the youth of South Africa through education.

“Education is the most powerful tool to change the world. We believe that through maths and science, you will be prepared for the real world as future leaders. Through this initiative, we aim to help make quality education available for all,” said Babalwa Lukhwareni, Commercial Manager for Industrial Chemistry at Protea Chemicals.

The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns have had a devastating impact on education and have highlighted the inequalities in access to quality education across the country. During the pandemic, the eduCate Matric Mathematics and Science revision programme helped struggling learners from around the country through its #SavingTheMatricClassof2020 initiative and this year the Company will continue to support youth education.

For the class of 2022, Primestars is launching its new campaign #InItWithYou which recognises the challenges South African students have faced over the last two years and the impact this has had on their education. Through this campaign, we will provide support to these students to ensure they excel in their final examinations and are prepared for the future.

The programme will provide examination-focused assistance to Grade 12 students from over 100 schools across South Africa. Through the video tutorials, which will be screened at movie theatres around the country, the curriculum, examination-style questions and step-by-step directions on how to solve problems will be covered as well as deeper conceptual information provided to learners to expand their understanding of the fields of mathematics and science.

The skills gained from the programme will help students access employment, open further study opportunities and grow key industries such as science and technology, engineering and healthcare across the continent.

Since its inception in 2010, over 100 000 matriculants from public schools have already benefited from the eduCate Mathematics and Science revision programme.
